We are not a house label. We are not a rock Label. We are not a Breaks Label. We are not a pop label. We are not an electro label. We are Calcium Records
It's difficult to write a ton of stuff about a label that's only been running 5 minutes, but the idea of Calcium Records and its many names and early incarnations, has been long ingrained in the heads of Producers Jamie Black & Chris McBride - Dirtpop, and due to a whole load of roller coaster circumstances now finds itself fruitioning 5 years after the fact, in New York City as well as the South Coast of England. From Brighton and west to the Dorset countryside.
Influenced by the Club sound and driving bass of Brighton Clubbing to the Free party scene regularly taking place on the South Downs. Dirtpop DJ'd regularly at Slackers Convention, a clubnite invented by Jamie Black and Jez Thomas in 2002, an event which in its variety was a platform for various electronic bands and producers to push there sound to an appreciative South Coast crowd. Capitalizing on the enthusiasm of the early arrivers (often the club would be 1 in 1 out by Midnight, and February can be a cruel time of year to be waiting outside on Madeira Drive next to the sea) the packed to the rafters shows were the early stomping ground for Dirtpop to define their sets and own style. Kicking off the Concorde 2 gig with a 2 hr set, with grooves ranging from Booka Shade to Plaid to Afx to their own cuts, always starting with an empty dancefloor...but in no time their blended glitchy electronica into Breaks and electro would have the earlies taking shape in the form of happy dancing clubbers at the front, and before you knew it 3/4's deep anticipating the first Live act of the night and to precede the Headliner DJ...General Midi, Cursor Miner, Si begg, John B, Tim Exile...you get the idea.
Dirtpop's love of organic music too kept edging its way into there sound, Dance music can get quite dull if all you do is listen to sequenced beats...Big fans of everyone from Beck, PJ Harvey, Fujiya Myagi, Kaiser Chiefs, Radiohead and these days turning to the likes of TV On The Radio, Cut Copy, Metronomy and Passion Pit, and because of this they wanted the label to form a bond between the electronic scene and the organic one, getting Rock fused with breaks, Pop crushed with glitch, Rap etched with pop, find a talented Band/Producer, find talented people to remix them, or even better. interpret...open more doors, get more people involved...spread something.
Calcium Records current roster of talent are Figo ( New York City band that fuses intense rock energy with pounding electro-beats and samples), Kites with Lights (electro pop Sounding like a mixture between Figurine, Orbital, old Pacific records and a healthy dose of Bernard Sumner-like vocals). Noisink; a Brooklyn resident who manages to create vocal infused Distorted hooks and melodies, with carefully structured beats echoing a unique style that could be compared to someone like Beck. Dirtpop wraps up the short roster with their own unusual and somewhat twisted slant on electro and Breaks added to their varied Remix agenda.
Part of the main point of the label was the crossovers...How many bands have you discovered these days via a remixer, or a remixer via a band? It's happens a lot now, and has become a more integral part of who we are, what we like, and what we do. Our remixers range from Stephen Cole (NC) to Tommie Sunshine (NYC) to Merlo (Portugal) , and is currently aquiring the remix talent of other producers from different genres of Dance music. Fortifying the releases and opening more minds. Strong, healthy music from your friends at Calcium Records.
